About

The Wells Reserve at Laudholm is a nationally recognized coastal research reserve located in Wells, Maine. Situated on a stunning 2,250-acre property of protected salt marshes, forests, fields, and estuaries, the reserve plays a vital role in coastal science, environmental education, and land conservation in southern Maine.

As part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System, Wells Reserve conducts critical scientific research to better understand and protect Maine’s coastal ecosystems. Researchers study climate change, sea-level rise, habitat restoration, and water quality, contributing valuable data to both local and national environmental efforts.

Beyond science, the Wells Reserve is deeply committed to public education and community engagement. The reserve hosts year-round programs for all ages, including school field trips, nature camps, guided walks, lectures, and workshops. These programs help residents and visitors connect with the natural world while learning how to be better stewards of the environment.

A centerpiece of the property is the historic Laudholm Farm, a beautifully restored 19th-century saltwater farm that now serves as the visitor center and event space. The surrounding trails offer over 7 miles of scenic walking paths that wind through woodlands, wetlands, and open fields, providing opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and quiet reflection.

The Wells Reserve is also a leader in conservation, managing land to preserve biodiversity and coastal resilience. Through partnerships and outreach, the reserve helps landowners and local communities make informed decisions about natural resource protection.

Whether you’re interested in science, hiking, history, or sustainability, the Wells Reserve at Laudholm offers a unique and enriching experience. It stands as a shining example of how environmental research, education, and conservation can come together to protect Maine’s coastal heritage.
