Hemp isn’t new. It’s been used in textiles and rope for centuries. What changed is regulation, not the plant. A drug-policy crackdown in the mid-20th century lumped industrial hemp in with marijuana, and most countries banned or heavily restricted it for decades regardless of THC content. That’s only been reversed in the last 10-15 years, which is why hemp is only now re-entering industrial supply chains at scale.

Where Hemp Fits Into a Sustainable Materials Strategy

Hemp is known for its versatility and potential to reduce carbon emissions. The plant has a lot of practical applications in various industries, including textiles, construction, and fuel. In fact, hemp may even be a more environmentally friendly option compared to other commonly used materials.

Textiles

Cotton is one of the most water- and pesticide-intensive crops in fashion supply chains. Hemp needs less of both, and processing advances now mean hemp fiber can run through existing textile equipment instead of requiring specialized machinery.

Hempcrete (hemp shiv mixed with a lime binder) is used for insulation and non-load-bearing walls. A recent life cycle assessment found hempcrete walls have an 88% lower global warming potential than concrete walls of the same size, largely because hemp sequesters carbon as it grows.

Relevant certifications. For textiles, look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification on organic hemp fiber. For construction materials, ask whether the hempcrete or hemp-based product has been tested against a recognized building standard in your market.

Traceability. Ask where the hemp was grown and processed, and whether the supplier can document that chain. This matters both for compliance and for any sustainability disclosures you’ll need to back up later.

Supply consistency. Hemp processing is still consolidating as an industry. Confirm the supplier can meet your volume needs reliably, not just for a pilot order.

Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles

Despite the numerous benefits of hemp, the industry has faced many regulatory hurdles. In the past, hemp was heavily regulated due to its association with marijuana, but recent changes have allowed for the cultivation and production of industrial hemp in many countries. The LCA or carbon data from your supplier, so you can show the basis for any emissions-reduction claim rather than stating it generically.

The percentage of material substituted, not just “we use hemp,” but how much of a given product line now uses hemp instead of the higher-carbon alternative.

Certifications tied to the specific batch or supplier, since generic industry stats won’t hold up under audit or investor scrutiny.

This is also where greenwashing risk creeps in. Claiming a “carbon-negative material” without supplier-level documentation is the kind of unverified claim regulators and investors are increasingly flagging. Keep the paper trail, not just the marketing line.

How Businesses Should Evaluate Hemp Before Adoption

Hemp’s carbon advantage is real, but it’s not the whole picture. Before treating it as a default substitute, it’s worth understanding why adoption has been slow, and where it still doesn’t make sense.

Why Hemp Adoption Is Still Limited

The biggest constraint isn’t the plant, it’s the infrastructure around it. Decortication (the process that separates hemp fiber from the woody core) requires equipment costing $900,000 to $5 million per machine, and a full processing plant can cost upwards of $15 million to build. That capital barrier means there are still very few large-scale processors, which creates three downstream problems for buyers: inconsistent fiber quality between suppliers, higher prices than conventional materials, and regional supply shortages, since raw hemp is expensive to transport and processors typically source within 75-100 miles of their facility.

Manufacturing compatibility is a real issue too. Hemp fiber and hempcrete both require adjustments to equipment or specifications built around cotton or concrete. That’s a switching cost most procurement teams have to weigh before committing.

Where Hemp Doesn’t Make Sense (Yet)

Hemp isn’t a fit everywhere. Hempcrete can’t replace structural concrete since its compressive strength doesn’t hold up under load-bearing conditions, it works for insulation and non-structural walls, not foundations or structural frames. Hemp textiles still struggle in heavy-duty industrial applications that need the exact fiber consistency conventional synthetics deliver at scale. And businesses running highly standardized manufacturing lines may find switching expensive if their equipment isn’t built to handle a new fiber specification.

Being upfront about these limits is part of what makes hemp sourcing decisions credible, rather than a green marketing claim.

The Economics

Right now, hemp materials generally cost more than the conventional inputs they’d replace, mainly because processing infrastructure is still scaling and supplier competition is limited. That gap should narrow as decortication capacity grows and more processors come online, but it’s not gone yet. Businesses evaluating hemp should ask suppliers directly about current pricing versus their existing material, and whether that supplier has multi-year capacity to scale with demand rather than a one-off harvest.

A Practical Way to Start

Businesses don’t have to replace an entire material category to benefit from hemp. Many start by introducing it into one product line, or using blended fibers (part hemp, part cotton, for example) to reduce risk while testing customer acceptance and supplier reliability. That approach limits exposure to price volatility and supply shortages while still building the sourcing relationships that pay off as the market matures.

Before committing to a supplier, procurement teams should ask:

  • Can you provide THC compliance documentation for every batch?
  • What’s your current production capacity, and how does it scale with our order volume?
  • Can you share independent LCA data, not just a marketing carbon claim?
  • What’s the lead time and regional sourcing radius for your raw material?

With the global industrial hemp market valued at $7.5 billion in 2025 and projected to reach $27.7 billion by 2033, growing nearly 18% a year, this is a category worth testing now, on a small scale, rather than waiting until supply and pricing catch up with demand.

Hemp isn’t a silver bullet for decarbonization, but it’s one of the few materials that’s commercially available today with a genuine carbon advantage built in. Textiles and construction are the two use cases with the most real-world traction right now; biofuel is still early.

The regulatory picture is improving, but sourcing across borders still requires checking local THC thresholds. And with the market growing at nearly 18% a year, businesses that start evaluating hemp-based materials now will have more supplier options and better pricing than those who wait for the category to mature.
