Reliance Industries Ltd., a global leader in integrated oil refining and petrochemicals, has achieved a significant breakthrough as the inaugural Indian company to convert plastic waste into high-quality materials for new plastics using chemical recycling. This pioneering step addresses the critical challenge of plastic waste and signifies a noteworthy advancement in India’s quest for a sustainable and circular economy.

Advancements in Plastic Waste Transformation:

Reliance Industries has positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable practices by developing advanced technology capable of transforming a variety of plastic waste, including single-use and multi-layered plastics, into pyrolysis oil. This innovative process marks a departure from conventional thermal pyrolysis methods, yielding not only higher quantities but also ensuring the production of superior-quality pyrolysis oil. The continuous catalytic pyrolysis technology employed by Reliance sets a new standard for efficient and environmentally conscious plastic recycling.

Production of Certified Circular Polymers:

Operating from its Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat, Reliance is currently at the forefront of processing chemically recycled pyrolysis oil to manufacture International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC)-Plus certified circular polymers. These polymers, known as CircuRepol (Polypropylene) and CircuRelene (Polyethylene), adhere to stringent traceability and sustainability standards. This certification establishes Reliance as a trailblazer in the chemical recycling production of circular polymers, contributing significantly to environmentally responsible practices.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainability:

Reliance Industries demonstrates a profound commitment to sustainability that extends beyond chemical recycling. Annually recycling a staggering 5 billion post-consumer PET bottles and repurposing end-of-life plastics for road construction, the company adopts a comprehensive strategy to minimize its environmental impact. The dedication to finding intelligent solutions underscores Reliance’s goal of inspiring widespread participation in the journey towards a more sustainable future. The company’s holistic approach sets a noteworthy example for environmentally responsible corporate practices.

By dispatching its inaugural batch of ISCC-Plus-certified circular polymers, namely CircuRepol and CircuRelene, Reliance Industries is setting a precedent for plastic recycling in India. The company’s ambitious target of achieving a total capacity of 1 million tonnes through sustainability initiatives by 2030 solidifies its dedication to driving positive environmental change. Reliance’s innovative chemical recycling technology not only transforms plastic waste but also establishes a benchmark for responsible industrial practices, positioning it as a key player in the global transition towards circular economies and sustainable living.
