In mid-2023, Volvo unveiled the EX30, its smallest and entry-level all-electric SUV. The Swedish automaker has confirmed that this compact EV will make its way to India by 2025.
Martin Persson, Head of Volvo Cars for Asia Pacific (excluding China), announced this in a recent media briefing in Delhi. He emphasized the EX30’s sustainability, noting, “It (EX30) is our most sustainable car ever, if you look at the CO2 footprint, it’s significantly lower than other cars. Of course, price is one thing but I think it will appeal to environmentally conscious people.”
Volvo EX30 Design
The Volvo EX30 boasts a minimalistic yet striking exterior design. Key features include a closed-off grille and a Thor Hammer-shaped LED DRLs digital pattern. The Volvo logo sits prominently on the grille, which houses the front camera and the ADAS radar.
The SUV’s sides feature a free-floating roof-like effect created by the blacked-out A-, B-, and C-pillars. The EX30’s wheel arches are rounded, accommodating up to 20-inch aerodynamically designed alloy wheels, depending on the variant. At the rear, the stylishly connected LED tail lights, inspired by Volvo’s flagship electric SUV like the EX90, with their C-shape design, catch the eye.
Volvo’s Sustainability Milestone with the EX30
The Volvo EX30 stands out as the company’s most sustainable vehicle to date, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint significantly. According to Volvo, the EX30’s lifetime CO2 emissions are nearly 25% lower than their current fleet’s average, thanks to the use of recycled materials and efficient production processes. Approximately 25% of the aluminum, 17% of the steel, and 17% of the plastics in the car are recycled, showcasing Volvo’s commitment to circular manufacturing.
Volvo EX30 Interior and Features
Inside, the EX30 continues the minimalistic design approach. Highlights include a modern 3-spoke steering wheel, vertically designed AC vents, and a portrait 12.3-inch touchscreen display (featuring wireless Apple CarPlay). The EX30 is available internationally with four cabin theme options, including two dual-tone upholstery choices.
The central infotainment unit is complemented by features such as wireless phone charging, heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and an air purifier. Safety features include multiple airbags, a 360-degree camera, rain-sensing wipers, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Volvo EX30’s Technology and Connectivity
The EX30 is equipped with Volvo’s latest connectivity features. It integrates the Google-powered infotainment system with built-in Google Assistant, Maps, and Play Store. Over-the-air (OTA) updates ensure the vehicle remains up-to-date with the latest software and enhancements, further future-proofing the EX30. The inclusion of a Harmon Kardon sound system elevates the audio experience, catering to premium preferences.
Volvo EX30 Safety Innovations
True to Volvo’s safety legacy, the EX30 introduces cutting-edge safety technologies tailored for urban environments. One notable feature is the “Safe Exit” alert system, which uses sensors to warn occupants of approaching cyclists or vehicles when exiting the car. The EX30 also debuts the next-gen Park Pilot Assist, capable of handling complex parking scenarios autonomously.
Global Recognition
The EX30 has already garnered attention internationally, earning a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Its blend of compact size and advanced safety features positions it as an ideal choice for city commuting.
Environmental Impact
Volvo has designed the EX30 with a smaller environmental footprint by focusing on materials and energy efficiency. With its compact size and reduced energy consumption during production, the EX30 aligns with Volvo’s larger goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040.
Volvo EX30 Powertrain Options
Globally, the Volvo EX30 is offered in three variants:
- Single Motor: Equipped with a 51 kWh battery pack, this variant has a single rear-wheel-drive motor producing 272 PS and 343 Nm of torque. It has a WLTP-claimed range of 336 km.
- Single Motor Extended Range: This variant features a 65 kWh battery pack with the same power and torque as the single motor variant but boasts a WLTP-claimed range of 475 km.
- Dual Motor Performance: The top variant also uses a 65 kWh battery pack but includes dual all-wheel drive motors, delivering 428 PS and 543 Nm of torque. It offers a WLTP-claimed range of 449 km.
The EX30 supports both AC and DC fast charging. The mid-and top-spec variants can charge at up to 153 kW, taking just 28 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent battery. The lower-spec variant supports DC fast charging up to 134 kW, achieving the same charge in 26 minutes.
Volvo EX30 India Price and Competition
Volvo is expected to price the EX30 from around Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, provided it is locally assembled like the XC40 Recharge. The EX30 will directly compete with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and serve as a premium alternative to the BYD Atto 3. It will also rival the BYD Seal, given the similar expected price range.
The Volvo EX30 promises to be a game-changer in the Indian EV market with its sustainable design, advanced features, and competitive pricing. Keep an eye out for its arrival in 2025.
EV Market Context
The EX30’s competitive pricing and features make it an attractive option in the premium compact EV segment. Its modular SEA platform, shared with parent company Geely, enhances production scalability and cost efficiency, allowing Volvo to compete effectively in markets like India.
