Kia Motors plans to introduce its three-row electric SUV, the EV9, in the Indian market by 2024. Marking the second electric vehicle (EV) from the South Korean automaker after the EV6 launched last year, the EV9 will be India’s first three-row EV in the mass market segment. Kia’s ambitious goal is to secure a 15% share in the country’s passenger EV category, currently dominated by Tata Motors. Additionally, Kia intends to unveil the latest generation Carnival MPV alongside the EV9 as part of its strategic product lineup.
The Concept of the EV9
The EV9 made its debut as a concept at the Auto Expo in January before being subsequently released in multiple international markets. Kia had earlier outlined its intention to bring the EV9 to the Electric vehicle industry of Indian market by 2025 and unveil three new models over the next three years, including two electric vehicles (EVs). Tae-Jin Park, Managing Director and CEO of Kia India stated, “By 2025, we plan to commence local production of a mass-market EV, with subsequent annual introductions of new electric models.”
The Design of the EV9
Constructed on the Electric Global Modular Platform, the EV9 boasts a length exceeding 5,000mm, placing it in a size category comparable to the Telluride. Offering versatility, the vehicle comes in both six and seven-seat configurations, and buyers can choose between two variants: HT Line and GT Line. Kia asserts that the EV9’s impressive range extends up to 541km on a single charge, accompanied by a brisk acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in just 9.4 seconds, courtesy of its 150kW electric motor. For those seeking enhanced power, a more robust 160kW motor will be an option in the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) trim.
Leveraging an 800V electrical architecture, the Kia EV9 facilitates ultra-fast charging capabilities. Kia reports that a mere 15 minutes of charging can propel the EV9 to cover an impressive distance of 239km. The flagship GT-Line variant introduces Level-3 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), enabling hands-free driving on highways via its highway driving pilot feature. Supported by a sophisticated network of 15 sensors, including two LiDAR, radar, and cameras, the system delivers a comprehensive 360-degree field of view for enhanced safety and awareness.
