BioD Energy (India) | UCO-Based Biodiesel Producer

Sustainable Development Goals

SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 – Climate Action, SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

Company Overview

BioD Energy (India) Pvt Ltd produces biodiesel from waste and residue feedstocks, mainly used cooking oil (UCO), animal fats such as tallow, and acid oils. The company was incorporated in 2016 and began commercial production in February 2019. It manufactures pure biodiesel (B100) to the Indian standard IS 15607 and its European equivalent EN 14214.

The company runs a production facility in IMT Bawal, Haryana, with an installed capacity of 100 tonnes per day. It is part of the ANIKA Group, a family-led business group with interests in pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and timber. A sister operation, BiOD Technology, runs a second 100 tonnes per day plant in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone, bringing combined group capacity to 200 tonnes per day.

Alongside fuel production, the company operates its own UCO aggregation network. It collects used oil from restaurants, hotels and food processors, so that the oil is converted into fuel instead of being reused in food preparation or discharged into drains. According to the company, it was the first to supply UCO-based biodiesel to oil marketing companies in North India, introducing B7 blended diesel to users.

Company-reported results for 2019 to 2025 include 55 million litres of biodiesel sold and 8 million litres of used cooking oil kept out of the adulteration market. The company states that it directly employs about 200 people. Shiva Vig, who founded the Indian and Dubai operations, serves as Director and CEO.

Why These SDGs Matter

SDG 7 applies because the company's core product is a renewable liquid fuel. Its biodiesel can be blended into conventional diesel and used in standard diesel engines, which widens the share of renewable energy in India's transport fuel supply.

SDG 12 applies because the company's feedstock is waste. Used cooking oil, animal fats and acid oils are collected and converted into a saleable fuel, with glycerin and pitch sold as by-products. This keeps material in productive use and reduces improper disposal of oil into drains.

SDG 13 applies because replacing petroleum diesel with waste-derived biodiesel lowers lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. The company reports cumulative savings of 144.6 million kg of emissions between 2019 and 2025. That figure is company-reported and has not been independently verified.

Approach & Methodology

The company converts waste and residue feedstocks into fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel. It describes its process as second-generation biorefining, meaning the inputs are non-edible wastes and residues, and not fresh vegetable oils. Feedstocks include used cooking oil, tallow, acid oils and similar residues, which often carry high levels of free fatty acids.

Feedstock supply is handled through a dedicated UCO team. The team runs collection, aggregation and tracking across the country and works with food service businesses and waste management partners. The collection model has five stages: an awareness session, onboarding under a written agreement, supply of storage containers, scheduled pickups, and payment of an incentive. Contracts specify pickup locations, container assets, estimated volumes, price and payment terms, and contract validity. Pickups run weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on volume, and documents are shared before and after each pickup.

Finished fuel is tested against IS 15607:2022 and the equivalent EN 14214 specification. Glycerin is generated as a by-product, at roughly 10 tonnes of crude glycerin per 100 tonnes of biodiesel according to the company, and is sold for industrial uses. A pitch fraction is also marketed as a recycled fuel product.

The company states that it aligns its operations with India's integrated biofuel policy and that its collection practice follows the framework introduced by the food safety regulator for repurposing used cooking oil.

Market Position

The company operates in India's biodiesel and UCO recovery segment, which is a small part of the wider diesel market. Its primary customers are public-sector oil marketing companies, which blend the biodiesel into diesel, and food businesses that supply used oil.

Trade press has described it as one of the earlier UCO-to-biodiesel producers in northern India, and the company reports being the first to supply UCO-based biodiesel to oil marketing companies in the region. Its position rests on integration between feedstock collection and refining, which gives it direct control over a scarce input. The sister plant in Dubai gives the group a second production base serving export markets.

Procurement Considerations
  • Confirm the biodiesel batch specification against IS 15607:2022 or EN 14214 through a test certificate
  • Check engine and fleet compatibility and the permitted blend ratio before adopting biodiesel
  • Request sustainability or carbon-intensity documentation for the biodiesel, including feedstock traceability records
  • Verify FSSAI aggregator status and the paperwork issued at each UCO pickup
  • Clarify contract terms for UCO collection, including pickup frequency, container supply, incentive or price, and contract validity
  • Ask about feedstock availability and supply continuity, since UCO volumes affect output
  • Confirm logistics and delivery arrangements from Bawal, including rail and road access
  • Review any third-party certifications held by the Indian entity, as the ISCC certification publicly reported belongs to the Dubai affiliate
Funding, Recognition & Ecosystem
  • DUBAL Holding, a sovereign-linked investor in the UAE, acquired an equity stake in the Dubai sister company BiOD Technology in 2024
  • BiOD Technology (Dubai) is reported as ISCC certified, audited by SGS
  • Reported collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the Biodiesel Association of India on used cooking oil management
  • Reported FSSAI-approved UCO aggregator status
  • Part of the ANIKA Group
Natnavi Analysis

BioD Energy (India) matters because it addresses two problems in India with a single operating model. Used cooking oil is a food safety risk when it is reused, and an environmental problem when it is dumped. The company turns it into a fuel with documented standards.

Its integrated model is its main strength. Owning collection, refining and fuel supply to oil marketing companies reduces dependence on third-party feedstock, and the use of waste inputs avoids competition with food crops. The sister plant in Dubai and the backing of a regional investor add some resilience at group level.

The company's contribution to decarbonization depends on feedstock supply and on the pace of national blending policy, both of which sit outside its control. Its headline results, such as cumulative emissions savings and litres sold, are company-reported, and buyers who need verified lifecycle data should ask for it directly. The scale of the Indian plant is modest next to total national diesel demand, so its impact is best read as a proof point for UCO valorisation. It is not yet a large share of the fuel supply.
